My Philosophy
My fundamental belief is you must give yourself the best chance to allow a good golf swing to happen. Meticulous attention must be made to how you take your grip, stance, and alignment. How you approach any of these areas is either going to give you your best chance at hitting a good golf shot, or takeaway from it. For instance, if you grip the club with a strong grip the face will tend to roll over too much. This may be a slicers best chance at making a good golf shot. A straight hitter with a strong grip is sure to hit a hook. That would not be their best chance. Everything you do from the time you set up to the golf ball, until you finish the swing, either will or will not give you your best chance. Below are my thoughts on some key elements of the golf swing as it relates to giving you the best chance possible.
Grip:
I encourage golfers to adopt a grip where the club runs diagonally across the base of the fingers. I prefer the thumb to sit just to the trail side of center of the shaft. This gives you your best chance because it promotes ample wrist mobility and club stability. It allows you square the clubface naturally.
Swinging the Club in Balance:
Learning to swing the club in balance is an absolute must if you want to give yourself the best chance. It's designed to move a particular way. The more you allow the club to move the way it was designed, the better chance you have of it returning to the ball on it's own. If the club is not in balance then you have to manipulate it at some point in the swing. If you rely on manipulation and timing, you guessed it, you are not giving yourself the best chance.
Swing Path:
If you can learn to swing the club in balance then you will develop a correct path into the ball. The correct path, that gives you your best chance, is a path that we call inside-square-inside. This means that the swing arc approaches the ball from the inside, squares to the target line at impact, and returns to the inside on the follow thru. This swing path will allow you hit every golf shot needed to play this game well.
Club Face Position:
Physics dictates to us that the best chance for a golf ball to find the green or fairway is to keep the clubface square to the path. This means that I do not want you to twist the handle of the club. Why? A clubface that is 2-3 degrees open or closed to the path can cause your drives to curve up 30 yards left or right. Most fairways you play are barely 30 yards wide. Are you really giving yourself the best chance possible if the ball is curving that much?
These are the 3 key elements of the golf swing that allows you to build a solid foundation to play better golf. Mastering them doesn't mean you will hit perfect golf shots every time. Tour pros miss hit the ball 25% of the time in case you thought they hit it perfect all the time. It does mean that you are giving yourself the best chance. My golf training courses are designed to help every golfer their best chance to play their best.
